World Book Day at The Wisbech Academy
World Book Day brings stories to life at The Wisbech Academy
Miss Borley, an English teacher at The Wisbech Academy, shares how students and staff brought stories to life during The Wisbech Academy’s World Book Day celebrations….
As an English teacher, there are certain days in the school calendar that remind you exactly why you chose this profession. This year’s World Book Day at The Wisbech Academy was one of those days: vibrant, joyful and genuinely inspiring from start to finish.
From the moment students stepped through the gates, it was clear this was no ordinary school day. Our corridors were transformed into a living, breathing library. Literary legends rubbed shoulders with modern fictional icons as students and staff fully embraced our ‘Go All In’ mantra for this year’s World Book Day. The creativity on display was remarkable. From meticulously crafted costumes to clever, imaginative interpretations of beloved characters, the effort was extraordinary.
Choosing winners for our competition categories was no easy task. Our Most Creative Outfit, Biggest Book Worm, and Sparx Champion awards celebrated not only flair and imagination, but also genuine dedication to reading and learning. The pride on students’ faces as their efforts were recognised was a powerful reminder of how much these moments matter.
A Community of Readers
One of my favourite parts of the day was our Lunchtime Book Swap. There is something wonderfully symbolic about students placing a well-loved book into someone else’s hands. Throughout lunch, conversations buzzed with recommendations, excited summaries and animated debates about favourite authors. Pre-loved books found new homes, and, more importantly, new readers. It was reading in its purest form- shared, celebrated and social.
Where STEM Meets Storytelling
This year, we wanted to do something a little different. By combining storytelling with STEM, we challenged students to think like authors, designers and engineers all at once.
Throughout the day, students created their own unique characters, developed imaginative plots, designed striking front covers and constructed their own mini books. Watching them move from initial idea to finished product was incredible. They weren’t just writing stories- they were planning, problem-solving and thinking critically about structure, design and audience.
For many students, this hands-on project unlocked a new confidence. Some who are often quiet in lessons became excited as they explained plot twists. Others who thrive in technical subjects found themselves completely absorbed in the creative process. It was a powerful reminder that literacy and STEM are not separate worlds. They strengthen each other.
A Special Celebration
Our day concluded with a whole-school assembly in Period 5, and we were incredibly honoured to welcome The Mayor of Wisbech as our special guest. Having the Mayor present prizes to our winners elevated the occasion and reinforced something very important: what happens in our classrooms matters beyond our school gates.
The sense of pride across the hall was substantial. Students were not only celebrating costumes or certificates; they were celebrating creativity, effort and achievement. It was a moment that connected our academy with the wider Wisbech community and highlighted the shared value we place on education and aspiration.
Lasting Impact
World Book Day is about far more than dressing up. It is about nurturing a lifelong love of reading, building confidence, and showing young people that their ideas have value.
What struck me most was the enthusiasm that carried on long after the final bell. Students were still discussing their stories at the end of the day. Books swapped at lunchtime were already being opened and explored at home time. Staff shared how engaged and energised their classes had been.
As Second in English, I could not be prouder of our students or more grateful to the staff who helped bring the day to life. Events like this strengthen not only literacy skills, but our sense of community. They remind our young people that imagination is powerful, that reading opens doors, and that their voices deserve to be heard.
At The Wisbech Academy, we believe stories can spark ambition for all and this World Book Day proved exactly that.
