As we celebrate this year’s National Apprenticeship Week, we’re highlighting the valuable opportunities available to our employees across the Trust. Alongside our comprehensive Centre for Professional Development offering, apprenticeships provide another valuable pathway for professional growth. Covering areas from teaching assistants to digital, finance and wellbeing, our apprenticeship offering equips staff with new skills, enhances career progression, and supports our commitment to high-quality, accessible CPD – a key strand in our recent People Strategy.
To showcase the impact of these opportunities, we spoke to two colleagues from across the Trust about their apprenticeship journeys. Solma Hussain, Administrator at Brooke Weston Academy, and Josh Bonnar, HR Administrator at Brooke Weston Academy, share their experiences and insights:
What were your career goals before starting the apprenticeship and have they changed since?
Josh: Before my apprenticeship, I was unsure whether to fully specialise in HR within education and business operations. This experience has given me clarity on my career path, and I now aspire to become a School Business Professional.
What does your apprenticeship involve?
Solma: The AAT Level 2 Apprenticeship provides a comprehensive introduction to accounting and finance, covering topics like double-entry bookkeeping, financial transactions, and basic costing. The apprenticeship combines online learning and practical experience, including cohort sessions for collaborative learning and access to a tutor for support. Additionally, off-the-job learning lets me study independently and apply my knowledge to real-world scenarios.
How have your mentors and colleagues supported you through your apprenticeship?
Solma: My line manager, Akvile Taylor, has been instrumental in my development. Her willingness to share knowledge and create a supportive, collaborative environment has boosted my confidence and helped me grow both personally and professionally.
How have you been able to balance your apprenticeship with other personal and professional commitments?
Solma: I keep open communication with my line manager, colleagues, and family to manage expectations and ensure support. My mentor and colleagues offer valuable guidance, helping me stay on track with my apprenticeship while balancing other responsibilities. Their support has been key in managing my workload and staying motivated.
Josh: Balancing an apprenticeship with daily job duties can be challenging, requiring time for self-reflection and study. However, staying organised makes it manageable. There's also a lot of crossover between my job and the apprenticeship modules, allowing me to apply what I’ve learned to my work, which has significantly boosted my personal and professional growth.
Thank you Solma and Josh!
As National Apprenticeship Week begins, it’s clear that the Trust’s commitment to professional growth is making a real impact. Through these opportunities, we are living our core values of Ambition For All and Excellent Teaching And Support, helping our staff reach their potential and apply new skills in their roles.
We’re excited to see how these apprenticeships continue to shape careers and strengthen the Trust’s future success!
