The Wisbech Academy, part of Brooke Weston Trust, buzzed with excitement last week as students immersed themselves in hands-on science workshops. These were delivered by the Cambridge Hands-On Science (CHAOS) team – a University of Cambridge student group famous for nationwide school roadshows with interactive STEM demos – and made possible through the Jon Egging Trust.

On 10th December, every student took part in a full lesson of interactive experiments and demonstrations, from mind-bending physics to surprising chemistry reactions that sparked curiosity and brought complex ideas to life. The Cambridge University science enthusiasts made concepts engaging and accessible, encouraging questions and real-world discovery.

The event was sponsored by the Jon Egging Trust, a charity founded in memory of Red Arrows pilot Jon Egging that delivers long-term programmes to build confidence, resilience and leadership in young people via dynamic STEM experiences and role models.

The event brought the Jon Egging Trust's mission to inspire young people right into the classrooms, echoing the Academy's passion for enriching opportunities beyond the everyday lesson.

Head of Maths Claire Gibson said: “It was a fantastic day for our students – full of energy, curiosity and excitement. Seeing them so engaged and enthusiastic about learning was brilliant.”

Dr Rachel Lawrence-Byron, the Academy's Principal, added: “We’re very proud of the inspiring experiences we’re delivering for our students here – it’s fantastic to see their passion ignited. I’m extremely grateful to the Jon Egging Trust and CHAOS for this wonderful partnership that brings such joy and opportunity to our community.”

This event formed part of an exciting series of whole-school community activities underway this term in the Academy’s new temporary building – opened in September 2025 to support a vibrant education during its main campus rebuild, with the permanent site due for completion in 2027.
